Early marine travel on rafts or canoes must have been human powered with wind power added as soon as ingenuity could figure it out. The height of sailing boats were the clipper ships of around 1850 and then steam and diesel power superseded the sail. But electricity is a more efficient way to provide transportation. Horse drawn trolleys were replaced by electric trains. Steam locomotives were replaced by diesel electric engines. In boats, electric propulsion is just beginning to appear alongside the now-ubiquitous internal combustion engines.
Dr. David Borton will talk about the benefits and problems for expanding the use of electricity in boats, including the benefits of solar powered electric vessels.
