Wooden boatbuilding and restoration requires an approach that is careful and thoughtful, based on years of experience. The crew at Reuben Smith’s Tumblehome Boatshop are a group of talented individuals with a headstrong commitment to their craft.

As owner/boatbuilder of Tumblehome Boatshop, Reuben grew up in a boatbuilding family, and has been working on wooden boats since about 1981. He has reestablished the Tumblehome Boatshop to focus on the high-end restoration and new construction of historic and classic wooden boats.

Sean O’Neill
Sean O’Neill

A highly talented woodworker and dedicated boatbuilder, Sean is indispensible in the boatshop. Sean and Reuben first started working together at Reuben's old shop in Kingston, Massachusetts and then at Hall's Boat Corp. in Lake George. 

Jake Greiner

A skilled and talented boatbuilder, Jake brings technical expertise and enthusiasm to his work at Tumblehome Boatshop. Jake is a graduate of the Landing School's Traditional Boatbuilding and Yacht Design programs. He has a degree in music from Skidmore College.

Nick Biles

Nick Biles is an experienced boatbuilder with a range of shop skills. Nick’s experience in historic boatbuilding, plus his skills in traditional and modern wooden boat construction suit him well at Tumblehome. His easy manner and passion for the craft make him a natural at the boatshop.

Matt Edmondson

Matt Edmondson is a graduate of Great Lakes Boatbuilding School. Matt grew up in New York on Lake Ontario, playing in boats and working on them all his life. With solid skills in systems and marine engines, Matt is a perfect fit at Tumblehome.

Brian Smith

Brian Smith brings expert craftsmanship to help in the boatshop and valuable, wide-ranging skills & experience to help with the facilities and boatyard. A native of the area, Brian's can-do attitude and understanding of the business make him a great asset at Tumblehome.

J Combs

J brings an important set of skills and certifications to his role at Tumblehome. An experienced mechanic, welder, and boat hauler, J has an easy style and a passion for troubleshooting, diving in, and doing things right. 

John Gaffney

John Gaffney joins us this year as a summer intern. John attends IYRS, the International Yacht Restoration School, in their Boat Building and Restoration Program. From nearby Old Forge NY, John also brings experience working around boats first as a marina dock hand and later as service technician.
